Everyone probably agrees that something had to be done about the criminal activities of some “biker gangs” and their members. We saw a series of raids and arrests occur very quickly after that terrible incident occurred at Sydney Airport Terminal. However those actions taken by the police were carried out under the existing laws and not the new laws. The new laws didn’t come into effect for quite a long time.
It seems that what was required to crack down on the gangs and their members was for the police to use the powers they already had. The new laws have added very little to the situation and probably had more to do with politicians wanting to have their photos in the media and to look like they are actually doing something.
The danger is that the new powers could potentially be used in the future to outlaw and shutdown other organisations or groups that have nothing to do with biker gangs or criminal activities under the pretext of law and order.
