Happy Australia Day
Australia Day falls on a Friday this year so a lot of people will probably be on the road, going away or otherwise making holiday plans.
The double demerit points are from 25 to 28 January 2018, so the Thursday before (when everyone will be at work) until the Sunday.
So what does it mean?
The double demerit point scheme applies for the following types of offences:
- Speeding - will be 6 points for a fully licensed driver going between 10km and 20km over the limit
- Illegal use of mobile phones - will be 8 points for this period
- Not wearing a seatbelt - 6 points per seatbelt
- Riding without a helmet - 6 points
That is a lot of points even for someone with a full licence, but for people on L's or P's it will mostly mean loss of licence.
What do I do?
If you have received a ticket then don't simply accept your fate, come and speak with Bruce Coode first about likely penalties, if you have any defences, and what you can do about the size of the fine or the duration of time you will lose your licence for. The first appointment is free, so if it turns out that nothing can be done then you haven't lost anything.
