While you are planning your Christmas Holiday, or trying to fit the various Christmas commitments you have into your calendar, don't forget to plan to drive slower and safer around Christmas.
Double demerit points will be in place from midnight Thursday 22 December to midnight Monday 2 January (or 23 December 2016 to 2 January 2017 inclusive).
The double demerit point scheme applies for the following types of offences:
- Speeding - will be 6 points for a fully licensed driver going between 10km and 20km over the limit
- Illegal use of mobile phones - will be 8 points for this period
- Not wearing a seatbelt - 6 points per seatbelt
- Riding without a helmet - 6 points
The double demerit points were introduced in the 90's because of our road toll. In 2015 in NSW 348 people died on NSW roads, up by 41 in 2014. We have already lost 350 lives in NSW this year. Slow down and drive safe over Christmas.
